What is Dupuytren’s Contracture?
Dupuytren’s Contracture, also referred to as Dupuytren Disease, is a condition that affects the fingers and hands, causing the fingers (and sometimes thumbs) to curl towards the palm of the hand.
It occurs when there is a thickening of the connective tissue within the hand, and quite frequently begins with a nodule, or lump that can be felt beneath the skin. The nodule often feels tender to begin with, but over time becomes harder and is often joined by other nodules as the disease progresses. The nodules are not cancerous and the condition is not life threatening, however in severe cases it can be painful and can significantly reduce manual dexterity; causing difficulty in picking up small items and the use of fine motor skills such as writing, typing and drawing.
If left untreated the nodules can develop into strands of tissue that form cords. Over time these can contract and essentially pull the finger or thumb towards the palm of the hand. In a lot of cases these contractures are quite mild and painless but they can get progressively worse over time.
The condition seems to frequently affect people of Northern European descent, leading us to believe that the gene responsible for it was brought over by the Vikings hundreds of years ago. The name of the condition comes from a 17th Century French doctor called Baron Guillaume Dupuytren who is claimed to be the first doctor to be able to treat the condition.
